Gut health, why is it so important?
Irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, crohn’s disease, diverticulitis, GERD, candida, chronic constipation, gas, bloating. With so many individuals suffering on a daily basis from digestive system issues, it is no wonder that gut health has become such a hot topic.
According to Holistic Nutritionist Kristy Whyte our gut has a unique microbiome where over 100 Trillion bacteria live and that a healthy gut is essential for good digestion, fighting inflammation as well as supporting the immune system.
A healthy gut contains diverse bacteria that help to support the metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates by providing a healthy digestive environment. They increase the absorption of calcium, copper, magnesium, manganese, and iron as well as the spectrum of B vitamins, which are all essential for metabolism. Metabolism of nutrients is essential not only for weight loss but also for proper hormonal balance. Good bacteria help to fight inflammation, constipation, and diarrhea as well as support our immune system and enable the production of serotonin (our feel good, happy hormone).
A study done in 2013 by Jeffrey Gordon at The Gordon Lab at the Washington University, St. Louis – found that certain bacteria microbiome profiles caused obesity. The less diverse your microbiome, the more you will struggle with weight control. Gut bacteria influences blood sugar balance and the way hormones affect our feelings of satiety. Most people think that they need to lose weight to be healthy when in fact the body needs to be functioning optimally to lose weight and keep it off!
So how do we get healthy and repair the digestive system to heal the body?
When food is broken down and metabolized properly the body is able to assimilate nutrients and form the necessary components to maintain health. Therefore, good digestion = Good health!
Dietary sources of probiotics are excellent for maintaining the proper balance of good bacteria in the gut. Sources include kombucha tea, fermented foods such as sauerkraut or radishes, plain yogurt, kefir, micro-algae, miso soup, pickles, tempeh (from soybean), and kimchi (fermented cabbage and spices).
